What is a Russian surname generator?

A Russian surname generator picks random Russian family names for characters, games, role-play and writing. Each name here comes with its meaning, because Russian surnames almost always come from a father's name, a trade, or a nickname such as an animal or a colour.

Russian surnames change with gender: Ivanov is a man, Ivanova a woman. The generator shows the masculine form; add -a for the feminine (see the table below).

A full Russian name has three parts: given name, patronymic (from the father's first name) and surname, as in Anna Sergeyevna Ivanova.

  • Nicknames from nature: Volkov (wolf), Medvedev (bear), Sokolov (falcon), Lebedev (swan), Morozov (frost).
  • Descriptions: Belov (white), Chernov (black), Smirnov (quiet one), Novikov (newcomer).

Frequently asked questions

Ivanov and Smirnov are usually listed as the most common, followed by Kuznetsov and Popov. All are in the generator.

How do I make a Russian surname female?

Add -a to names ending in -ov, -ev or -in (Ivanov to Ivanova, Nikitin to Nikitina). Names ending in -sky become -skaya.

Can I use these for characters?

Yes. They're real, common surnames, which makes characters feel authentic.

Are the meanings exact?

They're the traditional, simplified meanings. Some surnames have more than one possible origin.
