What is a fantasy name generator?

A fantasy name generator invents names for characters and places in stories, tabletop campaigns and games. Most generators pull from fixed lists, so the same names show up everywhere. Magic Random's generator assembles each name from syllables that carry meanings, so results are original and you can see what a name says: Thalwen is 'valley maiden', Ironbeard is 'iron beard', Silverhaven is 'silver safe harbour'.

Choose a race for characters, pick female or male, or switch to family names, towns, cities, kingdoms, worlds and taverns to build a consistent world. There's also a fantasy football team mode for league night.

Frequently asked questions

How does the fantasy name generator work?

Each name is built from syllables that carry a meaning: Thal (valley) + wen (maiden) makes Thalwen, 'valley maiden'. Pick a type (elf, dwarf, orc, human, dark fantasy, D&D NPC, family name, town, city, kingdom, world, tavern), choose female or male where it applies, and press Generate. The meaning of every name is shown underneath, and nothing is copied from a list, so names are original.

Can I get female fantasy names?

Yes. Choose Female and the endings switch to feminine forms for that race: elven names end in -wen, -riel or -ia, dwarven in -dis or -hild, orcish in -ka or -sha. Male and Any are also available.

Is this good for D&D and tabletop NPCs?

Yes. The D&D NPC option mixes races so a game master can fill a tavern in one click, and Tavern / inn names the place. Use Human for most townsfolk, Dark fantasy for villains and cultists, and Family name for noble houses.

Can I generate fantasy last names and family names?

Yes. Family name produces human surnames (Ravenhold, Ashford), dwarven clan names (Ironbeard, Stoneforge) and elven house names (Caelmir), each with its meaning. Human and dwarf character names also come with a matching family name.

Does it make town, city, kingdom and world names?

Yes. Town gives names like Silverhaven and Wolfmere, City gives Stormspire and Ravenhold, Kingdom gives forms such as Kingdom of Aelmark or The Valdian Reach, and World builds names like Thaloria or Mir-Sol. Each shows the meaning of its parts, so your map stays consistent.

Do the names come with meanings?

Yes, for every character, family and place name. The meaning is the combination of the syllables used, shown in the table under the results. Taverns and football teams are phrases, so they don't need one.

What is the fantasy football team name option?

A separate mode for fantasy football leagues: punny and bold team names such as Fourth and Long Island, Red Zone Rangers or The Waiver Wire Warriors. It's here because many people search for it alongside fantasy names.

Can I use these names in my book, game or campaign?

Yes. The names are generated fresh from syllables and belong to nobody. If a name happens to match a famous character, change a syllable.

How do I make names sound like they're from the same culture?

Keep to one type: all elven names share the same syllable pool, so Caelathien, Thalwen and Sylmar sound related. For a human kingdom, use Human characters, Family names and Town names together; they share the same roots (Ash, Raven, Storm, -hold, -ford).

Can I save names I like?

Yes. Press Save next to a name to keep it in a list on the page, then Copy saved to paste them into your notes. The list clears when you leave the page.

Is the fantasy name generator free?

Yes. No account, no limit, and it runs in your browser.
