What is a secret santa generator?

A Secret Santa generator is an online tool that randomly assigns each person in a group someone else to buy a gift for, so nobody draws their own name and every person gives and receives exactly one gift. It replaces pulling names out of a hat, and it solves the hat's two problems: people drawing themselves, and the organizer seeing everything.

Magic Random's generator works without email addresses. It creates a private link for each participant that reveals only their match, lets you exclude pairs who shouldn't draw each other, and carries the budget, date, note and wish lists along with the link. For groups in the same room, Instant draw shows blurred results you reveal one at a time.

How to use the secret santa generator

  1. Add participantsType each name or paste a list. You need at least three people. Tick “Add wish lists” if you'd like each person's Secret Santa to see gift ideas.
  2. Set exclusionsPick pairs who shouldn't draw each other, such as couples, siblings or last year's matches. Each exclusion works both ways.
  3. Add the detailsGive the group a name, set a budget like $25, choose the exchange date, and write a note everyone will see.
  4. Draw namesPress “Draw names & create private links”. The tool shuffles everyone into one gift loop that respects your exclusions.
  5. Send the linksUse the WhatsApp, Text, Email or Copy buttons next to each name. Each link reveals only that person's match and the recipient's wish list.

What people use it for

  • Office Secret SantaRun the office exchange without collecting email addresses or a sign-up form. Paste the team list, add the budget, and drop links in Slack or Teams.
  • Family gift exchangeExclude spouses and kids who already buy for each other, then share links in the family WhatsApp group.
  • Friends and roommatesAn instant draw at a party, or private links so the surprise holds until the exchange.
  • Remote and virtual teamsLinks work anywhere. Add shipping notes in the organizer message and let people ship directly.
  • Classrooms and clubsTeachers and club leaders can draw names for 30 or more students and hand out links or read matches from the instant draw.
  • Kris Kringle and Secret SnowflakeSame draw, different name. Use it for any one-to-one gift exchange, holiday or not.

How this compares with Elfster and DrawNames

Elfster and DrawNames are the best-known Secret Santa sites. Both are solid, and both are built around accounts and email invitations. Magic Random takes a lighter approach for groups that just want the draw done.

Feature summaries for other sites are based on their public pages and may change. If your group wants shopping lists with store links and reminders, those sites are a good fit. If you want the draw done in a minute with nothing to sign up for, use this one.

Secret Santa rules in brief

  • Set a budget everyone can afford and stick to it; $20–$30 is typical for offices.
  • Draw early, three or four weeks before the exchange, especially if gifts will be shipped.
  • Keep it secret until the exchange. Don't tell others who you drew.
  • Share hints: a short wish list or “likes coffee, hates scented candles” helps a lot.
  • Agree on the reveal: open gifts together and guess the giver, or keep it anonymous.

Frequently asked questions

How does a Secret Santa generator work?

You enter everyone's name, the generator shuffles them so each person is assigned exactly one other person to buy for, and nobody draws themselves. Our generator also honors exclusions (so couples don't draw each other) and gives every person a private link that shows only their own match.

Can I run Secret Santa without email addresses?

Yes. This generator never asks for email addresses. Choose “Private links”, draw names, and copy each person's link into a text, WhatsApp, Slack or any chat. Or use “Instant draw” to reveal matches in the room with no links at all.

Is this Secret Santa generator free?

Completely free, with no account, no app download and no limit on group size up to 100 people. The site is supported by ads outside the tool.

Can I stop certain people from drawing each other?

Yes. Under Exclusions, pick two people who shouldn't be matched, such as spouses, siblings, roommates or last year's pairs. The draw guarantees they won't get each other in either direction. If you add so many exclusions that no draw is possible, the tool tells you.

Does the organizer see who everyone got?

Not with private links. The organizer gets one link per person and can only see a match by opening that person's link. In Instant draw mode the results appear on screen, so use it when the group is together and can take turns looking.

Can I add a budget, date and wish lists?

Yes. Set a budget (for example $25), an exchange date and a note for everyone. Tick “Add wish lists” to give each person a wish-list box; their Secret Santa sees it when they open their link.

How do I send Secret Santa names by text or WhatsApp?

After the draw, each person has Copy, WhatsApp, Text and Email buttons. The message includes the group name, budget, date and their private link. “Copy all messages” grabs every message at once to paste into a group chat one by one.

Can someone see other people's matches from their link?

No. Each link contains a long random token tied to one person. It shows that person's match and the recipient's wish list only. Links can't be guessed or changed to see another match.

How long are the links valid?

Links work until 90 days after the exchange date you set (or 90 days after creation if no date was set). After that the group is deleted from our servers automatically.

What is the minimum number of people for Secret Santa?

Three. With two people the draw is obvious. There is no practical maximum here; the tool handles groups up to 100.

Can I redo the draw if someone drops out?

Yes, but you'll need to create a new draw and send new links, since the old assignments form a single loop. Add the exclusions again before redrawing. If a person is added late, the same applies.

Is Secret Santa the same as White Elephant or Yankee Swap?

No. In Secret Santa each person buys one gift for one assigned person. In White Elephant or Yankee Swap everyone brings a gift and people pick or steal gifts in turn, so no name draw is needed.
