What is a random word generator?
A random word generator picks one or more words at random from a dictionary-style list. It's used for party games like Pictionary and charades, for writing and songwriting prompts, for vocabulary practice, and for anything that needs an unpredictable word. Magic Random's generator draws from 6,000 common English words tagged by part of speech and difficulty, so you can ask for exactly the kind of word you need: a random noun, a random 5-letter word, an easy word for kids, or a hard word for a vocabulary quiz.
Every matching word has an equal chance of being picked, and the draw happens in your browser, so results are instant and private.

Frequently asked questions
How does the random word generator work?
It picks words at random from a list of 6,000 common English words, each tagged as a noun, verb or adjective and rated easy, medium or hard by how often it appears in everyday English. Your filters narrow the list, then your browser's cryptographic random generator chooses from what's left. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can I generate only nouns, verbs or adjectives?
Yes. Set Word type to Nouns, Verbs or Adjectives, or use the presets. Words that work as more than one type (like “run”) appear in each relevant list.
How do I get a random 5 letter word?
Click the “5-letter words” preset, or set Min letters and Max letters to 5. The list has about 960 five-letter words. Use Min 4 and Max 4 for four-letter words, and so on up to 12 letters.
Is this good for Pictionary and charades?
Yes. The Pictionary preset limits results to concrete nouns, things you can actually draw or act out, such as umbrella, guitar or frog. Set difficulty to Easy for kids and Hard for adults. For themed cards with a timer, use the Pictionary word generator.
Can I generate random words for a song or a story?
Yes. Writers use the “3 words” preset as a prompt: write a verse, a paragraph or a poem that uses all three. For song titles try two adjectives and a noun. For character names see the fantasy name generator.
Can I get words that start or end with a certain letter?
Yes. Use the Starts with and Ends with dropdowns. Combine them with a word length for puzzles, for example 5-letter words starting with S, which is handy for Wordle-style practice.
Are the words real English words?
All of them. The list was built from English frequency data and checked against Open English WordNet for meaning and part of speech. Proper nouns, abbreviations, inflected forms and offensive words were removed, so the list is safe for classrooms.
What do easy, medium and hard mean?
Easy words are among the most common in English (house, water, happy). Medium words are everyday vocabulary most adults know. Hard words are less frequent and good for vocabulary building or adult game nights (solidarity, plague, heir).
Can I generate random words with no repeats?
Yes, that's the default. Untick “No repeats” if you want repeats allowed, for example when simulating dice-style draws.
Is there a random word generator wheel?
This page uses a one-click picker rather than a spinning wheel so the result appears instantly on any device. The odds are the same: every matching word has an equal chance.
Can I use this for passwords?
You can use several random words as a memorable passphrase, like four medium words joined by dashes. For account security add a number or symbol and never reuse the same passphrase on two sites.
Is the random word generator free?
Yes. There is no account, no limit and no download. The site is supported by ads outside the tool area.
