What is a Japanese surname generator?
A Japanese surname generator picks random Japanese family names (myōji) for characters, games, language practice or curiosity. Each name here comes with its meaning, because most Japanese surnames describe a place: a rice field, a mountain, a bridge, a forest.
In Japanese the family name comes first, so Tanaka Yuki is Yuki of the Tanaka family. In English-language stories and forms it's usually written the other way round, Yuki Tanaka.

The building blocks of Japanese surnames
Most Japanese surnames are two kanji describing a landscape feature and its position. Once you know the common parts, you can read a surname like a tiny map.
| Part | Meaning | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| ta / da (田) | rice field | Tanaka, Yamada, Ikeda |
| yama (山) | mountain | Yamamoto, Yamaguchi, Sugiyama |
| kawa / gawa (川) | river | Ishikawa, Ogawa, Hasegawa |
| moto (本) | base, origin | Yamamoto, Matsumoto, Hashimoto |
| mura (村) | village | Nakamura, Kimura, Nishimura |
| naka (中) | middle | Tanaka, Nakamura, Nakajima |
| mori / bayashi (森 / 林) | forest | Mori, Kobayashi, Hayashi |
| fuji (藤) | wisteria | Fujita, Fujii, and the -tō in Sato, Ito, Kato |
A little history
For centuries, mostly nobles and samurai families used surnames officially. In the Meiji era, laws in 1870 and 1875 allowed and then required all citizens to register one, so many families chose names from the land around their homes. That's why so many surnames describe fields, rivers and villages.
Japan now has tens of thousands of surnames, and the same kanji can sometimes be read in more than one way. Sato, Suzuki and Takahashi are the most common today.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common Japanese surname?
Sato is generally ranked the most common, followed by Suzuki and Takahashi. All three are in the generator.
Do Japanese surnames have meanings?
Yes. Most are written with two kanji that describe a place or feature, such as Yamamoto (base of the mountain) or Tanaka (middle of the rice field). Meanings shown here are the usual readings; a few names have more than one.
Which comes first in Japanese, the surname or the given name?
In Japanese, the surname comes first (Tanaka Yuki). In English text it's commonly reversed (Yuki Tanaka), though Japan's government has asked for the Japanese order to be used in English too.
Can I use these for characters in a story or game?
Yes. They're real, common surnames, which makes them a good choice for believable characters.
How many Japanese surnames are in the generator?
About 60 of the most common, all with meanings. Choose “Any origin” in the tool to mix them with 18 other origins.
